Sometimes you have located a herd by using telemetry to find the elephant that has a tag, but that elephant may be hidden in the bush. If the herd is crossing a road to get from one area to another, footprints will help figure out where they are crossing, which gives you a chance to see the tagged elephant if it follows them.
